Flipgrid

Bring the back row forward by giving ALL students the ability to respond to a question through a video! Flipgrid is a great tool to reach all students. No student gets left behind here because all students have a chance to have their thought heard and to hear others’ thoughts. Flipgrid allows you to create a “grid” or a library of topics that all students get the chance to respond to.

Negatives: The free account only includes one free Flipgrid (with unlimited topics) and limited features or you can pay $65 a year for full access to all features and an unlimited number of Flipgrids. If you teach multiple subject areas to different students (like middle and high school teachers), it might be in your best interest to pay for the full access so you can have a separate Flipgrid for each subject area or class you teach.

Lesson Ideas: Rather than having students brainstorm on paper for an essay or project, have the students use Flipgrid. Post the project or essay prompt on Flipgrid as a topic and have the students use the grid to brainstorm ideas. Post opinion questions on a Flipgrid topic to have students respond to it in their opinion. Post a historical or scientific picture as the topic and write some questions about the picture to have students interact with the picture.

Below are some important screens that you should know about to ease the navigation of the site.

When you first sign up for the app, this is the screen that appears first. This shows all of your Flipgrids that you create (if you have the classroom account; only one appears for the free account). To create your Flipgrid, click the blue button that says New Grid. Then follow the steps in the next section of this post.

At the top of the screen, there is a navigation bar. This bar allows you to navigate your account. This screen is the top part of the Dashboard The Dashboard shows the number of posts and responses over the course of time.

This is the second part of the dashboard screen. It shows all of the data from above in a graph form.

The last option at the top navigation bar is Connections. This section of your account can connect you to many other Flipgrids that have been created. It allows for your students to respond to these if you connect to them as well.

Finally, the drop down arrow next to your name reveals this menu. It allows you to change or update any account settings.

Below, I have included step-by-step screens that can help you create your first grid.

The next thing that you should know about is how to add a topic to your newly created grid. This is very simple and the program helps walk you through it. Here is a step by step guide to help you before you are ready to commit to the app.

Finally, these screenshots are what the students will see on the app when posting to your Flipgrid.
